What are Newton Rings?
The film used for aerial imagery and other photographic processes comes with a finer grain that ever before. This enables the film to have a better resolution and yet it creates the challenge of Newton Rings. Newton Rings are formed by the base of the film pressing against the glass. It has always been a problem with the base side of film, but now Newton Rings can form on the emulsion side of the new higher resolution films. Below is a sample of Newton Rings showing up on a digital file. The enhance version is similar to what an oil spill looks like on water.
