Cymbidiums

This type of orchid likes filtered light.

We keep our Cymbidiums in a shade house only.  The shad cloth is ~50% and they are left out nearly all year (in Florida).  When temps go into the mid 20's we bring them in to the greenhouse to be protected from total freeze.  These watering at night or day is no issue.  Temps in the low 30's seem to be a must to set a spike.  They also seem to like to FILL a pot before they want to bloom.  We use a sand, seedling fir bark, spaghnum moss and potting soil mix for ours.  They seem to do fine in that.  There are many more expert then we are with Cymbidiums but this gets you started.  If you grow these I would recommend a semi shad location and leave it out till after a few light frosts and then keep it out as much as you can after that.

Watering should be done often enough to allow the plant to completely dry out or water if it has not rained in a few days.  Do not keep a water tray under the plant with the pot in the water.

Use fertilizer about 1 time per week at 1/2 recommended and add a tablespoon per gallon of NON BLEACH TYPE liquid laundry soap.  We normally only use a 20-20-20 mix.  If you use a bloom booster do not use more then once a month at the same 1/2 strength.
