Myrmecophila tibicinis (Schomburgkia)

This is a plant that has hollow bulbs. This allows ants to freely run up and down the plant under protection in order to help the plant be protected.  This flower is on a spike that it about 3 feet long.  Take a look below!  This is the July 2002 blooming of a slightly larger plant.  It is reduced to be a small file but it gives you the idea how HUGE this thing gets!  I am 5'11" and my arms are normal length.
